Seeing Outside Our Box

Jul 07, 14 Seeing Outside Our Box

As a society we may have access to more information and be better educated than at any time in our history, but are we getting any wiser?

Our society is a vast and intricate system. It is a dynamic system evolving from the interaction of an almost infinite diversity of components – many of which are complex systems in their own right. Whether we like it or not, the components making up our society are both inseparable and interdependent – each making its own unique contribution.

We are becoming so specialized in our careers and so isolated from the very communities in which we reside that we are losing sight of the big picture. We are losing the capacity for critical thinking and fail to understand the full implications of our actions. We think we are objective in our view of the world. However, we fail to recognize that we do not see the world as it is but as we are – that each of us has a unique perspective of the world based on the filters through which we view it. We end up putting ourselves in a certain box and that is where we live our lives. We then become frustrated when someone intrudes into our box or when things don’t turn out as we think they should.

Life is getting more and more complex. This is due, in part, to the incredible amount of information and opportunity available to each of us today. How do we cut through this clutter? How do we make the effective decisions in such an environment? Making decisions and thriving in this environment requires wisdom. This is the wisdom that comes from broad, general knowledge and experience together with the power to apply these elements critically and practically. This also includes an understanding of the inter-relatedness of the numerous components that make up our society and the overall environment in which our society exists.

Whether we like it or not, we do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. It is time to reconnect to our communities and to the world at large. Our society is a system consisting of a large collection of inter-related pieces. A successful future is based on having at least a basic understanding and appreciation of this system and how it works. This allows us to cut through the clutter, empowers us in our decision making process and enables us to identify the actions necessary to achieve results.
